May 14, 2010, Newsletter Issue #178: The Seat

Tip of the Week

The seat acts as a safety implement during a crash because it keeps the driver in the roll cage of his/her car while absorbing some of the energy of the impact. The driverīs seat must be directly attached to the tubular structure known as the roll cage to prevent a driver from being thrown from the car and as a result injured or killed. The shape of the seat also plays an important role in keeping a driver safe. Many seats wrap around the driverīs rib cage and shoulders so that the impact of a crash is not concentrated on a small section of the driverīs body.
