February 3, 2006, Newsletter Issue #28: Restrictor Plates

Tip of the Week

A square aluminum plate that has four holes drilled into it is known as a restrictor plate. It is placed between the carburetor and the intake manifold to reduce the flow of air and fuel into the engineīs combustion chamber. This reduces the carīs horsepower and speed.

This device was first implemented for safety reasons following the 1988 crash of Bobby Allisonīs car into a retaining fence at 210 mph (338 kph), which endangered hundreds of fans. NASCAR officials believe that restrictor plates are necessary to prevent high-speed crashes at the large tracks.
