NASCARīs first season was held in 1949, and had a total of eight races. The top ten NASCAR Grand National (now known as Winston Cup) drivers of 1949 were:

1. Red Byron: 842.5 points, six starts and two wins
2. Lee Petty: 725 points, six starts and one win
3. Bob Flock: 704 points, six starts and two wins
4. Bill Blair: 567.5 points, six starts and no wins
5. Fonty Flock: 554.5 points, six starts and no wins
6. Curtis Turner: 430 points, six starts and one win
7. Ray Erickson: 422 points, four starts and no wins
8. Tim Flock: 421 points, five starts and no wins
9. Glenn Dunnaway: 384 points, six starts and no wins
10. Frank Mundy: 370 points, four starts and no wins
